Black Joy in Children’s Books
Representation is important in children's books. Children should be able to see themselves reflected in the stories they read. But representation doesn't have to be limited to serious or heavy topics. It's also important for children to see and read about Black characters who experience joy and happiness.
By celebrating the everyday joys of the lives of Black people, we can inspire all children to appreciate the beauty and diversity of the world around them. Books that provide a glimpse into the everyday lives of Black people celebrating the simple joys of life can help children see the beauty and love that exists within the Black community. They can inspire all children to celebrate their own unique identities.
Stories showcasing Black joy can also help combat harmful stereotypes and promote a positive self-image. They can also help children of all races and backgrounds see that no one BIPOC group is a monolith.
It's important to note that Black joy doesn't mean ignoring the struggles and injustices that Black people face. Instead, it's about showing that despite these challenges, Black people can still find joy and love in their lives. By celebrating Black joy in children's books, we can help all children see that Black people are not defined solely by their struggles, but by their resilience, strength, and humanity.
Books in our annual book list will include those that provide a glimpse into the everyday lives of BIPOC people, those titles that actively uplift and celebrate BIPOC cultures, and we may include books on heavier topics. We vow to have a range of books that leans more toward joy than not.
